| Drummer, James Gonzales, started sitting-in with local pros when he was 14 years old. He played his first professional date with his father, Paul Gonzales, when he was 15. At the age of 16, he led his own group, the James Gonzales Quintet, at the Outpost Performance Space. Now, at 17, he is a free-lance Jazz drummer and performs with his Rock band, Shadow For War. James has worked with local stalwarts: Steve Figueroa, Patty Stephens, Bert Dalton, Milo Jaramillo,Rodney Bowe, Dimi Disanti, Colin Deuble, John Lewis, Dan Spanogle, and Michael Olivola. James' first jam session, when he was 12 years old, was with James Williams. Some of the musicians that James has sit-in with include: Bobby Shew, Doug Lawrence, Dan Trudell, Cesar Bauvallet, Arlen Asher, John Rangel, Justin Ray, Greg Ruggiero, Rob Wilkerson, Randy Napoleon, Luis Guerra, Kanoa Kaluhiwa, Chris Ishee, Stu MacAskie, and David Parlato. James calls Art Blakey (Buhaina) his drum-hero. His other favorite drummers are Billy Higgins, "Philly" Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, "Papa" Jo Jones, Max Roach, and Alan Dawson. When James was 6 years old, he had his first drum lessons with Ken Battat. He currently studies with Andrew Poling. Diego Arencon & John Trentacosta have had a big influence on James, with their advice and encouragement over the years. |
